The Capilano University Fulmer Family Centre for Childhood Studies is a purpose-built facility integrating teaching, research, and experiential learning for the Department of Early Childhood Care & Education (ECCE). The building provides 74 childcare spaces at grade and ECCE classrooms above, situated beside an environmentally sensitive woodland atop a stream bank. The design prioritizes preservation and enhancement of the existing forest and natural habitat.

The outdoor play environment is woven into the woodland through a meandering pathway connecting nature-inspired play elements, including log structures with climbers and slides, a tree trunk–carved tea house pavilion, sand areas, and living willow features. These components are dispersed throughout the forest to promote exploration and immersive, nature-based play. Adjacent to the building, a large bamboo deck supports vegetable gardens and outdoor group learning.

Natural materials and sensory-rich experiences define the landscape, incorporating wood logs, stumps, gravel paths, native plantings, and tree-inspired lighting. Loose and moveable elements such as wood blocks, sand, water, and woodchips further encourage creative engagement.

Most existing trees were retained. A play structure for children aged 3–5 was carefully designed around two mature trees to create a “treehouse” experience. Materials from necessary tree removals were repurposed on-site for seating, sandbox edging, and play features, while existing boulders were preserved as integral landscape elements.

Through the thoughtful integration of architecture, ecology, and play, the project fosters creativity, sensory learning, and a strong connection to place.
