Announcing new Partner and Associates

We are pleased to announce that Jennifer Nagai is now a Partner at PFS Studio. She brings with her a track record of award winning projects, design expertise and strong leadership skills.

Jennifer Nagai CSLA BCSLA OALA ASLA LEED® AP
Jennifer has developed a diverse portfolio of complex, highly urban, public open space projects throughout Canada. Over the fifteen years that she has been in practice, she has been committed to high standards of execution in all aspects of design and project delivery. Jennifer has strong expertise in interdisciplinary design, having studied both architecture and landscape architecture, and from her work experience in multi-disciplinary firms. Much of her work focuses on collaboration with artists and the articulation of rich conceptual ideas through precise, expressive detailing. Art and landscape have been seamlessly intertwined in Jennifer’s most notable projects at PFS Studio, including the Canadian Veterans’ Memorial and Sherbourne Common in Toronto. Jennifer is the project manager and lead designer on The Grange Park in Toronto and Century Gardens in Calgary.

As a LEED Accredited Professional, Jennifer integrates natural systems into the urban context through innovative, sustainable project solutions. She was the project lead on Sherbourne Common along Toronto’s developing waterfront, which has won several awards for both design excellence and innovative best practices in sustainability.

Jennifer has a Landscape Architecture degree from the University of Toronto, and practiced in Toronto for several years before joining PFS in 2004.

PFS Studio is also pleased to introduce our new Associates: Mike Derksen, Jia Li, Lin Lin, Nastaran Moradinejad, Chris Mramor, Nicole Taddune and Cherie Xiao.

Mike Derksen CSLA BCSLA ASLA LEED® AP
Mike has over 15 years experience in a wide variety of project types, in Canada and abroad. Upon completion of his Masters degree at the University of Manitoba, he spent two years working for the public housing authority in Singapore and five years practicing in San Francisco, attaining ASLA accreditation in 2004.

Mike joined PFS Studio in 2005, and has since been involved in the masterplanning and design of waterfronts, urban parks, streetscapes, ecological open space, high-density residential projects, and educational and commercial campuses. He played a key role in UBC University Boulevard and Central Feature in Vancouver BC, Lansdowne Park in Ottawa ON and Canoe Landing Park in Toronto ON.

Mike specializes in project management and construction detailing and enjoys all facets of the design process, from conceptual design and public consultation through design development, construction documentation and contract administration. Mike heads the construction quality control group at PFS Studio.

Jia Li CSLA BCSLA
Jia joined PFS Studio in 2006, bringing outstanding design, graphic, and computer rendering abilities to both our national work and international work in Asia. She has developed expertise in 3D modeling and multi-media design software used for rapid visualization, and highly detailed renderings used for competitions and marketing purposes. Her outstanding design, graphic and computer rendering abilities, along with her expertise in 3D modeling and multi-media design software have contributed substantially to some of our most important projects and competitions, including Ninghai Dujuanshan Senior resort valley in China, Kensington Gardens Development in Vancouver, Impression City and Zhuzhou Huitianran Eco-Park Planning in China and Bridgepoint Hospital in Toronto.

Jia majored in environmental design at China’s Tsinghua University for her undergraduate work, and received a Masters degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of British Columbia. Before relocating to Canada, Jia worked in China focusing on large scale landscape planning, resort and public park design projects.

Lin Lin CSLA BCSLA LEED® AP
At PFS since 2003, Lin has managed projects through all facets of the design process from conceptual design for rezoning through schematic design, design development, construction documentation, and contract administration. Her experience seeing projects through construction has been a valuable asset in all phases of the design process. Lin’s background and experience in both architecture and landscape architecture ensure her designs are well integrated with both architecture and context.

Lin has worked on projects throughout Canada and China, including Richmond Olympic Oval, West Vancouver Community Center, ASPAC River Green Village, Fairmont Hotel, Georgia Street Link and Vanke Blue Mountain  in Pudong, China. She has been instrumental in winning some recent international design competitions, including Edmonton City Center Airport Lands and the University of Manitoba Visionary (re)Generation design competition.

Lin graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Masters degree in Landscape Architecture, and received her Bachelors degree in Architecture from Xiamen University, China. She also studied at the College of Environmental Design, University of California, Berkeley.

Nastaran Moradinejad CSLA BCSLA LEED® AP
An effective leader and a strong project manager, Nastaran manages some of the firm’s largest and most significant projects in the public realm. Her interests are in multi-disciplinary technical projects requiring custom solutions to unique project demands. Nastaran is a LEED Accredited Professional and takes an interest in the site’s ecological systems and innovative ways to integrate them with the site design. She has been project manager for such projects as Ken Spencer Science Park at Telus World of Science, Britannia Mine Museum, Empire Fields and Plateau Sports Park at Hastings Park and Edmonton Arena and Entertainment District.

Nastaran has served on the BCSLA Board of Directors as President Elect, President and Past President from 2011 to 2014 and has been a member of the BCSLA Continuing Education Committee since 2009. She also sat on the District of North Vancouver Urban Design Panel from 2010 to 2012 and served as Vice Chair from 2012 to 2014. Nastaran earned her MArch from the University of Tehran before attaining her MLArch at UBC.

Chris Mramor CSLA BCSLA
Chris has been a landscape architect and project manager at PFS Studio for over two decades. Chris has brought his interest in creative conceptual design, integrated site planning, innovative construction detailing and heritage conservation to numerous PFS projects including Parliament Hill, Confederation Square and Rideau Hall in Ottawa, and Coal Harbour Waterfront, Hastings Park and Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver. Chris’s experience includes large and small scale, public and private sector projects, both locally and internationally. His international experience includes restoration plans for the Vimy Memorial in France, the ShaoHao Mausoleum in China, and resort/residential development plans in the United States and Southeast Asia.

Chris is a native of Vancouver, where he studied Forestry at the University of British Columbia before completing his degree in Landscape Architecture. He is a member of the City of Vancouver’s Urban Design Panel.

Nicole Taddune CSLA BCSLA LEED® AP
Nicole’s focus at PFS Studio is in planning and urban design. With over 10 years of professional experience, she has worked on a range of projects from masterplans and design guidelines, to detailed site design. Nicole utilizes her diverse background in planning, community engagement, design, fine arts, informal science education and project management in all of her projects. She is interested in creating vibrant and engaging spaces that foster social and environmental sustainability and embody the values and heritage of the communities they serve.

Nicole has been involved in the planning and design of the public realm for the University of British Columbia’s Point Grey Campus. She is currently playing a key role in implementing the master plan for the new civic heart of campus helping ensure the vision as set forth in the plans is fully realized in the built environment. Nicole also managed UBC University Boulevard Precinct Plan, UBC University Boulevard Gage South Precinct, UBC Student Union Building, Little Mountain Housing Community Plan and DeHart Community Park Master Plan.

Nicole holds a concurrent graduate degree in Community and Regional Planning and Landscape Architecture from the University of Oregon. She is a guest lecturer and studio reviewer at UBC where she has also assisted with a summer urban design studio in Amsterdam.

Cherie Xiao CSLA BCSLA
Cherie has over 12 years of local and international experience in complex urban design and open space projects. With combined experience in both landscape architecture and urban design, Cherie’s strength is in conceptualizing innovative and elegant solutions for a wide range of scales from regional urban planning, resort and public park design to detailed intimate public and private spaces.

Cherie has played a key role in many of PFS Studio’s most successful projects in Asia, including projects in Shanghai, Ningbo, Zhoushan, Haikou, Yantai, Changsha and Kunming. She brings design excellence and bilingual management skills through all phases of the projects. Cherie has received international awards for her design and research work, including the Sichan Earthquake Memorial competition in Shanghai, and Pandora Community Park in Vancouver.

Cherie holds a Masters Degree with honours in landscape architecture from the University of Toronto and a Bachelors Degree in urban planning from the University of Suzhou in China. She practiced for several years as an urban designer in Canada and China before joining PFS Studio in 2006.
