The Zhuhai Hengqin Bay waterfront plan offers a new model of waterfront development intended to establish Zhuhai, and more specifically the districts of Nanwan and Hengqin, as a leaders in sustainable, livable city design. The plan puts forward a concept for a vibrant, pedestrian-oriented waterfront together with interrelated commercial areas, complete neighborhoods, parks and civic institutions. A central focus is the creation of an interconnected waterfront with a strong urban relationship to the surrounding city, reinforced with intersecting parks and recreational corridors.
It is anticipated that as Zhuhai moves closer and closer to its goal of becoming China’s top livable city, it will attract economic drivers consisting of select groups of clean industries specializing in research within such fields as marine science, information technology, digital and graphic production and tourism. It is hoped that the plan will become a showcase for its carefully considered planning approach that emphasizes the importance of a clean environment, energy and resource efficiency, low ecological impact, health and wellness, and connection to nature.
